Executive Director

Roy Callan

Roy CallanBaron Roy begins his fifth season at the helm of Camp Haiastan after succeeding our founding Executive Director of more than twenty years, Bob Avakian in 2004. Baron Roy has over thirty years combined experience in the fields of education, private business and Armenian community involvement that includes Armenian camping, religious education, A.Y.F. Junior youth leadership, athletic coaching and facility management. Baron Roy lives in Franklin, MA near Camp Haiastan with his wife of thirty-one years Yerchanig, affectionately known around camp as “Digeen Joy”. All three of the Callan children, Dikran 28, Vahan 27 and Knar 24, have attended Camp Haiastan for a combined 15 seasons and Knar has held a staff positon for 3 seasons. The Callan kids travelled every summer from their previous home of 30 years in Michigan to attend Camp Haiastan during the “Detroit Session” as it was known in those days.


Summer Camp Director

Peter Jelalian

Peter JelalianBaron Pete begins his fifteenth year of association with Camp Haiastan in the capacity of Summer Camp Director. A public Middle School Special Education teacher and Department Head of more than twenty-nine years, the majority of Baron Pete’s summers since he was 9 years old have centered around Camp Haiastan as a camper, counselor, and Summer Director. Baron Pete hails from Nanuet, New York and is married to wife Christine also a veteren teacher in the New York City area. The Jelalian’s have a daughter Theresa who is a regular camper and avid athlete and is now attending Middle School in Nanuet.


Day Camp Director

Nevart Mikaelian

Nevart MikaelianIn 2006, Ungerouhi Nevart was a key figure in the launching of our first Day Camp season as the first Day Camp Director. As we enter our third successful season with Ungerouhi Nevart at the helm of our Day Camp, we anticipate the best season yet! Please join with the entire A.Y.F. and Camp Haiastan family in congratulating Hratch and Nevart on the birth of their first child, Zareh this past November. We laud them in their effort to help keep the Day Camp stocked with campers of the future! Ungerhouhi Nevart is a veteran elementary special education teacher with the Natick, MA school system and brings a wealth of knowldege and enthusiasm to our Day Camp program. Currently a member of our Board of Directors as well, Nevart has served Camp Haiastan as a Summer Director, and both Hratch and Nevart served as counselors, and both were veteran campers for many seasons.
